The need for a person to have hobbies

There is an old English adage which goes like, All work and no play turns Jack into a dull boy. But after a person grows up to a certain age, play for him need not be some specific sport or a physical activity. When people say play, they refer to something that people would love to invest their valuable time, energies, passion and intellect into, to achieve a skill which though would not give him any external incentives, will surely give him some deep sense of satisfaction and help him evolve into a more complete, more reflexive, more joyous and importantly, into a living being who loves living and enjoys all it's pleasures.
